PBA 5'10" - Oh So Close!
After 44 hours of
driving and over 4,400 KMS (using Charles Go's 2003 Toyota Corolla with 250,000 kms) on the road to and from Jacksonville,
Florida - we are back !!! We started our day at 5:45 am with an early 'personal' goodluck wish from our Commissioner
(Dario Decastro) - then off to the border and went through New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, Virginia and
finally staying overnight in North Carolina - woke up around 5ish and continued our trek onto South Carolina, Georgia and
finally Florida at around 3ish in the afternoon ...at the same time - the rest of the crew have boarded their planes around
12ish noon (Sept 1st) and met up with us in Jax at around 6ish. Now talk about dedication and commitment eh - checked
out the pool then the next day the beach and some shopping while Coach Erle stayed behind and rested. Friday night ,
the players were actually sleeping by 11 pm . Woke up early (6:15 to precise) to be at the opening ceremonies. Now onto the games ... Our 5'10 team were
ranked number 11 overall at the start of the tournament - then ranked 7th going into the quarter-finals and losing to
the eventual Champions Toronto in the semi-finals - one of the upside is our team will be ranked number four next year in
Montreal.

Game summaries: Game one : Ottawa vs. Jacksonville (Saturday 8:30 a.m.) Our lads started off a bit slow and cold - since we have 2 new rookies and another (considered
a rookie in PIBNA games). But once the butterflies have flown out of their bellies .. Ottawa came back and led the game by
2 going into the second half . The second half wasn't as fun but we only lost by 8 points at the end of the
game. This was the same Jacksonville team that won it all in PIBNA 2008 here in Ottawa. Game two: Ottawa vs. Charleston (Saturday 1:30 pm) We needed to win this game and not by a point or two - after re-grouping and tweaking the lineup a bit
- we pulled away early in the game led by our rookies Ernest, Mark p. Glenn (rookie year in PIBNA) and second-year player
Darren - of course our veterans Charles, Sem and Oldie pitched-in a lot as well. Didn't even have to use veterans
Base and Mike Bautista at all. The speed and hustle of these players were incomparable - I just wished that
our members and fans were there to witness it - we won by 42 points!!!! I felt bad for the Charleston
team (which never really gave up) but we needed to win by huge margin in order to have a decent standing going into the elimination
round. Game three: Elimination round Ottawa (7th) vs New Jersey (10) (Saturday 6:30 pm) You know the old adage - 'if ain't broke,
don't fix it' so we started the game with the same starting lineup against Charleston - New Jersey didn't know
what to expect from our lads - but before you know it - we were up by 14 points in about 10 minutes - again led by our speedsters
- Glen, Sem, Charles and Ernest and shooting by Darren and rebounding and defensive skills by Base, Oldie and Mike (oh wait
he didn't play 'coz he is hurt) . Granted this Jersey team is missing a player or two but they are a quick team and
strong inside - our lads kept on fighting and at one point we were only up by 4 points - called a time-out and the rest was
history. Went back to the hotel and rested ...players were in bed by 11 pm. ... Coach Erle attended the Director's
meeting and received some congratulatory comments for having a competitive team. Game Four : Quarterfinal game Ottawa (6) vs Montreal (2) (Sunday
8:45 am) Used the same lineup and pulled away to lead by 9 points in 3 minutes - Montreal called time-out but our lads are
just too quick and aggressive. Our center Base was in foul trouble again early in the game (can't figure out these
Florida refs) so this time we have to use Mike Bautista and he had some key plays (considering he was hurt) - our rookie
center Mark p. had some nice moves inside and defensive moves ... Oldie our 'role-player' did just that - rebounding
and dishing it out to his teammates .... and nothing can really compare to the speed and strengths and shooting skills
of our guards/ forwards (Glen, Ernest, Darren, Sem and Charles) - at the end of the game - someone asked me 'Coach,
what do you feed your players out there in Canada - I said 'Rice' - but seriously I said - they have the heart that
can't be trained nor develop). Game Five :Semi-Final game (Sunday 11:00 am) Keep in mind that our players have played their
hearts out on all their previous games and pretty much banged-up - but I have asked them to use whatever energy
they have on this game (this is not an excuse - it is the truth) . We started pretty good on this game - led by 8 points
in 6 minutes - but an early two-foul on Base forced me to sit him down - This Toronto team was blessed with very
physical players and plenty of team I must add. We switched to zone defense to give some of our players some rest
but this strategy have back-fired and Toronto came back and led the game going into the half. We switched back to
man-to-man defense (down by 18 points) and our players have started to hit their shots - Toronto were getting all the bounces
and we weren't - and Base was out of the game (fouled-out) with 14 minutes left on the second half .. however, Mark p
and Oldie did their job as Base's rotational players. Our players were a bit banged-up at this point .. Semberg got elbowed
and kneed, same with Ernest and Darren fighting a cold - Charles and Glen were getting winded out for not having subs - but
our team kept on fighting - diving for the basketball , still pressing and chipping it away to 4 points with 5 minutes left
on the game - but Toronto finally prevailed with having ample healthy players. It is no shame to lose to the eventual champions
of the Division.

Ottawa's
11U Came 2nd at PIBNA 34 in Virginia Oh what a feeling... it was a pandemonium when PBA Ottawa's
11U beat New York in the semifinals. The same team that beat Ottawa during the round robin could not believe what hit them
in the semis. Unfortunately, that means no trip to the beach because they had to play again in the championship round. You
would not believe how much fun it was watching our future champions. Congratulations to all PBA Ottawa team for the job well
done, 11U, 15U and the 5'10" team. Many thanks to all the parents, friends, officers and volunteers for all the support
during the tournament. Hoping that we can do it again next year to Jacksonville!
[11U & 15U] July 3-4, 2010 -Team Cagers Tournament
in Montreal: PBA Ottawa - weekend in Montreal in the TEEN CAGERS CHALLENGE and TEEN CAGERS tournament. We sent two 11U teams (Aces and Bees)
and one 15U team. Our 15U faced two very tough opponents, not to mention some of them looked older than the 15U's parents
(not kidding) did not qualify into the playoffs. It was a very good experience for our rookie coach Sem Pertosa
and his team. Although the loss was tough, our 15 year-old players were happy to gain some experience from the tournament.
On the brighter side, with the guidance of coaches Arnel Obas, John Valentino
and Rio Buentiempo our 11U Aces reached the quarter-finals but failed to advance to the next round. However,
the other 11U team, the Bees (with 7 players - 4 boys & 3 girls) after winning 1 and losing 1 on Saturday,
shocked many teams by winning both their quarterfinal and semi-final games on Sunday by more than 20-point deficit. They went
to the finals for the Championship game against a very strong team from Mississauga (Jayhawks). Not taking
away some credit from Jayhawks, but this team had a huge advantage against our Bees. Not
only did they have a player who is about a foot taller than all our players they also came with 11 players and had a "bye"
in the semi-finals because their opponent came late (won by default). The Bees ran out of gas against the
Jayhawks but fought until the last second of the game. The Bees came an inch in capturing
the championship trophy in the finals. All 7 players got silver medals. We are so proud of the 11U Bees and
the other 2 teams who gave their 110% effort to compete. " 11U Bees players are: Niko Bunagan Joshua
Buentiempo Nathan Garcia Spencer Murray Danel Chua Rechelien Dispo Leanne Laureta
Congratulations
to our 11U Bees team and to the 11U Aces and 15Uteam! They are definitely
ready to compete this Labour Day weekend for PIBNA 2010 in Virginia, USA...
[Rookies(10U)] April
24, 2010 - PBAOttawa in Kanata Tournament
Congratulations
to the PBA Rookies for winning the Kanata Invitational Tournament this weekend with a 3-1 record!!! Although one great player is crucial to a team, he/she
cannot make a team. This was proven this weekend when the young Ottawa PBA Rookies took to the court and demonstrated what
they could accomplish as a team. Each game of the tournament was very exciting
for the Rookies and their awesome fans. The first game of the tournament was against the host team where the Rookies
still remembers bitterly losing to them a month earlier. The Rookies certainly did not forget their last meeting and used
this motivation to hand Kanata a sounding defeat. The
second game against Peterborough was a battle. There were numerous lead changes and the climax being at the last 3 minutes
when the game was tied. It was in these last three minutes that the Rookies showed their true colours. They were patient and
looked for the good shots. They ended up winning the game by 6 points. The third game was against the Bantam team of the Kanata Cavaliers. Although the Rookies were against
a more experience and older team, the Rookies played like veterans and soundly defeated the Cavaliers. The last game of the tournament was against the Bantam team of the Hull
Dragons. Although the Rookies again were younger, less experience and smaller, they fought like champions. Although the Dragons
out rebounded the Rookies, their character demonstrated that it's not how big you are, but how big you play! The Rookies
cut a 12 point deficit to 4 points, but unfortunately they just ran out of time. Thank you to all the parents and fans for their support and we look forward to more successful
tournaments this summer! Congrats to the Rookies Team!!: Albert Opena, Rechelien Dispo, Kobe Mesa, Jordan Santos, Amy Argel, Joshua Buentiempo,
Jared Valentino, Spencer Murray, Sarah Murray, Leeann Laureta, Miko Gloriani, Niko Bunagan, Danel Chua, Ron Manuel, Kane Obas

[Open] December 5, 2009 - Realtors
51 Vs. Eastside 51 PBA Ottawa 2009 Invitational
Basketball Tournament @ Carleton University-Yes, the championship game ended in a
tie! This was due to the lack of gym time (unfortunately). Thank you to all the participants, volunteers, officers
and referees for making this tournament fun. Highlights:The Gatsib team played
with determination, but lost key players early on in the game through fouling out. The FOB rag-tag
team played with a lot of heart but were just short of the win. However, they gave the Realtors a run
for their money, considering their youngest player (FOB) is 32 years old! All in all, the tournament
could have gone to any team (no one team showed dominance). Goodluck to all in the upcoming tournament March 2010!
[ROOKIES] February 24, 2009 - PBAOttawa
69 vs. Goulbourn Hornets 26 Proudly wore their
PBA basketball jerseys, tied up their rubber
shoes to face off the Goulbourn Hornets, who were undefeated with 3 wins against their division level. The game started
at 6:00pm with a standard court regulations for novice division - lower basketball nets and half-court play rules.
Both teams had their stretches of great play and individual strengths, that at a very young age, reminded everyone in the
gym of two young teams who both have a lot of talents and great potentials in the basketball scene. The expertise and rigid
training of coaches from both teams surely paid-off. The Hornets turned the ball over 20 times but didn't lose any hope
of trying more hoops. With coaches Arnel and Ronan's technical instructions at the side court, the Rookies soared up a
remarkable score, slamming the game! PBA Ottawa Rokies bagged the game with 69 points over Hornets, with 26 points. Vijo - played extremely well, top scorer, offensive
juggernaut Kane - played a very aggressive game, excellent defense and good outside shooting Niko
- played a complete game, awesome dribbling and good jump shots Amy - took control of the game, awesome dribbling,
wicked jumps shots and passing Kevin - very athletic, quick steals and monster on the boards Darren
- defensive force, great defensive and offensive rebounds, great drives to the basket Danel - all around
good game, great passing, dribbling and defense Rechelien - played a very sound game, great passing and rebounds
Spencer - played without fear, awesome fast breaks and a monster on defense Sarah - played
a well disciplined game, awesome dribbling and passing!! Hats
off to coaches Arnel and Ronan for a well delivered game! For sure, this will not be the
last time that PBA Rookies and Goulbourn Hornets will face-off. Who will win in the next round? Stay tuned! Story by: Rhea Rivilla, Arnel Obas and
Ronan Mesa
[35+] May 19, 2008-Tournament Champs! Who says if you're over 35 yrs old that you can't play 5 games of basketball
in two days and not be in the hospital after this stint??-We'll our Master's division team did exactly
that - played 3 games on Saturday (May 17) then two games the next day - mind you a few of them were a bit rough during the
semi-finals game - but got it all together during the championship game. Highlights: A game that could've
gone either way! Our 3-2 high-zone-trap defense is what made our guys the victor. We have our big men (Vic/Base)
diving for basketballs - you don't see that everyday. Our guards, Paulie, Mike,
Dario and Arnel with their suffocating defence leaves no room for the opposing teams to
setup their offense - our forwards (Paul,Joey and Base) took care the frontcourt
- offensively and defensively. The centers, Vic and Base swatted shots like hitting tennis
balls out of the park. This was a good test for our Masters' team for the upcoming PIBNA2008 - playing 5 games in 2 days
and still able to walk out of the gym...To all the organizers of the tournament - a job well-done. We received a Wilson Evolution
basketball, crystal trophy and medals. Thanks to the Rivilla's and Bunagan's for
arranging a very nice 'packed' lunch for the team - thank you. -Coach Erle
[35+] April 18, 2008 PBAOttawa Vs. ChineseTeam Manage to win by a 'point' -The Chinese team can really hit 'em 3's.
So, we switched from 2-3 zone to man-to-man (which is not easily for folks over 35 yrs old of age. This is a good tune-up
for our players 'coz they'll be facing teams with former 'Open' players. Some of our Masters' players
were former 'Open' team players as well ...namely (Base,Mike,Jhun,Arnel
and Mark Q) and a couple of our players played College and semi-pro back in the Islands (Paul
and Vic). We were missing Willie J. Jr and Vergel Meneses and Willie
Tejero. Some of our 45 yr old folks ran with these guys and still have some of their moves. Once, the chemistry is
established between these guys - I'll be surprised if we don't make it to the final four this coming labor day weekend
tourney. -Coach Erle
[Womens] April 5, 2008 PBAOttawa 65
Vs. Charlan Cougars 17 The back to back games of the PBA Girls
(10 Minutes between games) didn't come as a problem. They fired in all cylinders with their offense. The high
powered offense smothered the Charlan Cougars and could not counter with the full court press of the PBA Girls. Alea
'Ale-luyah' De Castro led the offense gunning 16 points and was unbelievable in both side of the court. Ina
'Ball-Ina-hoop' Nepomuceno added 14 more points of her own to lead the supporting cast on offense. Luisa
'Lulu-layup' Cardenas and Melissa 'Storie-time' Storie both added 8 points each
as well. The powerful PBA offense looked like a freight train that could not be stopped as they pounded the Charlan Cougars
65-17 in the game. Alea 'Ale-luyah' De Castro was chosen the MVP of the game. The PBA Girls
are now starting to gel and looked to be more confident on the basketball court as they now improved their exhibition game
to 6-1 for the year. If there is anything these girls have, it is speed and intensity. GO PBA GIRLS GO!
[Womens] April 5, 2008 PBAOttawa 53 vs. Cornwall Lions 32 The
long awaited ride for some of us from Ottawa to Cornwall and the first road trip of the PBA Girls team this year
finally came to an end this afternoon. Again some of the PBA girls were late as usual for some unexpected detour along the
way. The PBA team got to another slow start as they found themselves trailing 4-2 early in the game. Once the quick, scrapping
defense got on track, the offence got going. The offense was led by Ina 'Ball-hoop' Nepomuceno with
10 points and Joanne 'Jb ballin' Balmaceda countered with 9 points of her own to lead the attack.
Swarming defense led by Erika 'Et' Teodoro, Jennifer 'Whip' Marcelo and
Analyssa 'Littlefoot' Cardenas led the defensive assault on the front court. The half ended 25-17
for the PBA Girls in the lead and never looked back. The Lions tried to stay close in the game but failed as the PBA Girls
ran their fast break to perfection ending the game 53-32 for the win. Erika Teodoro was named MVP of the
game.
[Womens] April 3, 2008 PBAOttawa 53 vs. Philemon Falcons 12 It wasn't your typical basketball game from the start as the PBA girls came in late due to
the commuting traffic on their way to Hull. With one referee and half of the PBA Girls players still missing, the wait
was on. But surely enough, everything turned out well in the end. They displayed their patented defensive game against the
Falcons. The PBA girls struggled shooting only 17% but still held the lead 17-11 in the first half. It was a different story
in the second half as the PBA Girls picked up their running game early in the second half. If you cannot shoot from outside,
you might as well get the inside game going and that's exactly what the girls did. The attack was led by their point
guard ‘Air' Jesa Rada who scored 10 points and dictated the tempo in the second half. Strong offensive
rebounds from Paustine 'Popo' Gonzales as she led all scorers with 11 points in the game. Outstanding
defensive plays from Erika 'ET' Teodoro and Jen 'Whip' Marcelo who
also tallied for 10 points dominated the front court. The PBA Girls speed proved to be too much for the Falcons to handle
as they were humbled 53-12 in the end. Paustine Gonzales was named MVP of the game. The PBA girls are now
4-1 in exhibition game as they take their record on the road to Cornwall this weekend against the Lions. Can the Lions stop
the running game of the PBA girls? We'll soon find out. Go PBA Girls! -PBAOTTAWA Coaching staff
[15U] April 1, 2008 PBAOttawa vs. Kanata Selects When
all was said and done, the long awaited game between the PBA Boys and Kanata Midget Selects were finally played. The
PBA Boys Team was led by Darren as he scored 11 points in the game and Neil pounded
8 points from the inside. Strong defensive works of Noel provided the intensity on the defensive front court
of the PBA Team. David and J.R solidified the offense pitching in 7 points each in the game.
J.R ignited the crowd with a beautiful ‘spin o rama' move from the right side and banked it off
the board. It was just one of the highlights in the game. Good low post interior defense by Neil and
Darren with George and Akie minimized the damage caused by Kanata center
Charlie Range. He led his team with 13 points for Kanata. The presence of the Pagal brothers(Darren
and David) on the front court proved to be a lethyl combination in the game. Coach Erle Rodriguez
was very pleased with the way his boys responded after the loss last game. As you well know, good team always bounces back
from a loss. Next stop is the rematch with the GCBA Midget Selects team next Friday. It should be a good one! See you there.
