It all
started in the mid-70's right here in
Ottawa, when a bunch of basketball afficionados got together and formed a 'League of their own'. Mr. Pepe Carbon
of Montreal (formerly of Ottawa) and Mr. Willie Juane Sr. was one of them. We call him, 'The Commish" - the
cities were - Montreal,Hamilton,Toronto and Windsor...Ottawa wasn't really a big part of the newly formed league (PIBNA),
since our player pool at the time was rather scarce.
Around the early 80's, Fil-Can
of Ottawa was formed. The members participated in several local tournaments and house-leagues. Around 1988 - 89,
Mr. Juane then decided the association was ready to join the 10 year old PIBNA (Philippine Inter-City Basketball of North
America). He gathered his 'kaibigans' and committed most of his time towards building PBA Ottawa to what it is
now.
We have seen a tremendous growth in our membership and participation
from our community. What started as 2 teams has grown to the following divisions: 13U, 15U, 17U, 5'10,
Open, 35+, 45+ and Womens' team.
We are a non-profit organization with several objectives,
the main one being to provide guidance and promote sportsmanship amongst the youth of the Filipino-Canadians here in Metro-Ottawa
(see attached by-laws). We rely on hard work and (donated) time by our members and volunteers, without them (specially
the volunteers), we probably would have folded a long time ago. But we're here to stay and hope to keep on growing and
be successful in every way and that can only be accomplished with your never-ending support.
